Privacy policy

Last updated: 30 October 2026

Scout helps students find and track career opportunities. This page explains what personal data Scout keeps, why, who else handles it and what you can do about it. Scout is run by Carlo Celano, Turin, Italy, who is the data controller. Contact: carlocelano16@gmail.com.

What we keep

DataWhy
Email address and password (the password is stored only as a secure hash)To create your account and let you sign in
Your profile: name, date of birth, citizenship, city, university, field and level of study, expected graduation, languages, interests, and optionally periods you'll be awayTo check age limits (Scout is for people aged 16 and over; friends, chat and profile pictures are for people aged 18 and over), estimate travel costs, offer date filters and compute how well each opportunity matches you
Your activity in Scout: what you save, apply to, go to, aren't sure about or dismiss, firms you mark as contacted, and opportunities you add yourselfTo show you your own lists
Optionally, your home address and addresses for periods awayTo estimate commute times and travel more precisely
Optionally, a profile pictureTo show friends who you are. Each picture is checked automatically for inappropriate content by OpenAI's moderation service before anyone else can see it
Optionally, links to your social profiles or websiteShown on your profile to the people you choose in Settings
Your username, friends, and messages you send to friendsTo run friends, chat and sharing
Group chats you join or create, invitations you send, and what you write in themEach item has its own group chat, and you can also start a group with friends. Everyone in a chat sees your messages, your name, username and photo, and whether you applied, are going or aren't sure, but only if your Privacy settings let them see it. You can leave a chat at any time. Messages reported to us are read by an admin
When you were last activeTo show friends when you were last on Scout (only if you allow it in Settings) and to count active users
If you use the CV builder: what you write in your CV, how often you use the writing help, and whether you've paid for a CVTo save your CV, keep the writing help within a fair daily limit, and unlock the clean download once you've paid
Feedback you sendTo improve Scout. Scout's admins see the message with your name and email address, so they can reply
If you turn on notifications: a notification address for that deviceTo tell you about new messages, shared opportunities and friend requests

Your profile details (date of birth, citizenship, address, interests) and your CV are private. What friends or other users can see of your activity (what you applied to, where you're going, events you went to) and of your links is up to you in Settings → Privacy. Scout's admins can see each account's email address, name, university, sign-up date, last sign-in and simple counts (friends, messages sent, items saved) to run and support the service; they can't read your messages or your CV, except a message someone reports to them. We don't sell your data, show ads or use tracking cookies. Scout stores a few preferences (like your filters, theme and language) in your own browser.

Legal basis

We process your data to provide the service you signed up for (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR). Checking profile pictures, handling reports and keeping the writing help within its limits are in our legitimate interest in keeping Scout safe and fair (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). Optional details, such as a photo, links, an address or notifications, are only used if you add them, and you can remove them at any time.

Who else handles your data

These providers process data on our behalf, only to run Scout, under their data processing terms:

Some of these companies are based in the United States. Where data leaves the EU, it's covered by the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.

Organisers' logos are loaded from Google's website-icon service (or DuckDuckGo's, when Google has no sharp icon), so your browser contacts them when a list shows logos. The request carries the organiser's web address and the usual technical details any web request has, such as your IP address; nothing from your Scout account is sent. The page's fonts come from Google Fonts in the same way.

How long we keep it

As long as you have an account. When you delete your account, your profile, photo, lists, messages, CVs and the opportunities you added are deleted straight away. Payment records kept by Lemon Squeezy follow the tax rules that apply to them.

Your rights

You can see and change your profile at any time from Profile in the account menu, and delete everything with Delete my account (under Sign out). You can also ask us for a copy of your data, a correction, deletion, or to stop or limit some processing, by writing to the contact email above. If you think we've handled your data wrongly, you can complain to your data protection authority (in Italy, the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali).

Age

Scout is for people aged 16 and over. You can't create an account or save a date of birth if you're younger. Friends and chat are for people aged 18 and over. Anyone can add a profile picture; it's checked like every other.

Opportunities listed on Scout

Scout links to events and programmes run by other organisations. When you open one, that organisation's own privacy policy applies. Always check details on the organiser's website before applying.

Changes

When this policy changes, we update the date at the top. If a change affects how your data is used in an important way, we'll tell you in Scout first.
